Russia, here we come!

March 30, 2010

Well….after months of preparation, our trip to Russia is only days away.  The recent terror bombings on the Moscow subway have not dissuaded us in any way.  Sure, it’s a bit unnerving but I refuse to live my life in fear.  For those of you who don’t know why we are going to Russia, I’ll give you the abridged version.

About seven years ago we hosted a Russian boy named Alex in our home for a year.  Alex is the brother of one of my best friend’s (Brett Morrison) wife.  Anyway…we have known the family  for some time.  Alex is all grown up, finishing his college degree in Pipeline Engineering and getting married next week.  Hence the reason we are going. To attend a two-day wedding in Nizhnevartovsk, Russia.

We are leaving on Friday, April 2nd and will arrive in Moscow at 10:10am on the morning of April 3rd.  By the way…in case you are wondering, it’s a 19 hour plane ride!!!  Alex is picking us up at the airport and we will be staying with him while we tour Moscow for a few days.

We are flying to St. Petersburg on Tuesday and spending two days there.  I know what you are thinking…not enough time in such a beautiful city.  True, but we have to get to Nizhnevartovsk by Thursday.

Apparently, Russian weddings are two days long.  I know very little about their wedding customs and we are all very excited to find out!  I know this.  Vodka will be consumed in copious amounts and there will be lots and lots of food.

We will be  spending the next couple of days scrambling for last-minute travel items, trying to pack early, get the dogs to the kennel etc.  We are planning to take tons of pictures and I will update this blog daily. (internet access permitting).

If you know of any Russia travel tips or customs to be aware of, please comment below.  We need all the help we can get!

PEKA!  (good-bye in Russian)
